Google announces Gemini 4 Carbon, but restricts access to cyber defenders; researchers protest

Google's official blog announced Gemini 4 Carbon, a new frontier model following Gemini 4 Argon from two weeks ago. Due to the US government's voluntary pre-release testing process, Carbon is initially available only to a subset of cyber defenders, expanding gradually via the Fairwind Program before reaching developers and consumers. RLHF researcher Nathan Lambert criticized the approach: "Don't bother announcing your scores if we can't use it."
