'Mistral is not France': Hugging Face dev pushes back on France picking an AI champion
AymericRoucher · x · 2026-10-29
After former French PM Gabriel Attal visited Mistral and declared "Mistral, c'est la France," Hugging Face's Aymeric Roucher publicly pushed back: betting all government tokens on a single player condemns the rest of the ecosystem to not innovate, and "every time the State picks a champion, it ends badly" — politicians lack the competence to decide who to back. He argues the State should only fund infra-scale tasks too big for private actors, not carry one player to the goal line.
