Developer adrianmg released noted, a local-first Markdown notes app written in Rust, inspired by the snappy software of the 80s.
Benchmarks on an M4 Max with 1,000 notes show it crushing mainstream tools:
- Launch: 2.6ms vs vim 9.5ms, Emacs 30ms, Apple Notes 370ms, Obsidian 500ms, VS Code 681ms
- Memory: 5.3MB vs Obsidian 382MB and VS Code 770MB
- Disk: 2.5MB vs Obsidian 441MB and VS Code 767MB
- Keystroke latency of 0.075ms; typing in a 30,000-line note takes just 0.10ms
Design: no save button (every keystroke is written to disk), one plain .md file per note with sync via iCloud/Dropbox/Syncthing/Git, Vim keybindings, and live Markdown highlighting. Installable via npm, Homebrew, cURL, or PowerShell.
