Meta Quietly Expanded Rights to Train AI on Business Content — UK/EU Users Can Object Before Nov 20
404 Media · rss · 2026-10-28
404 Media reports Meta updated its commercial terms to allow using "any content from such domains, web pages, or URLs to provide, develop, improve, research, train, and maintain" its products, angering artists and small businesses on Instagram and Facebook. The change, originally effective Oct 30, was pushed to Nov 20 after backlash; Meta also removed the word "train" from the use list and narrowed it to "advertising and business products," though broad scraping leeway remains.
UK/EU users can object under GDPR and the AI Act: Instagram users posted walkthroughs via the privacy center's "object" form and received approval emails. 404 Media saw the options via a London VPN, but the Meta AI objection form returned an error — eligibility may hinge on where the account was created. Users elsewhere currently have no opt-out; unless something changes by Nov 20, "the rest of us are screwed."
