Chris Paxton: robotics' long tail is too long — generalist humanoids will win

Anthropic researcher Chris Paxton says he fundamentally agrees with 1X CEO Bernt Børnich on the core value of humanoids: the long tail of robotics tasks is too long to build, scale, and maintain a specialized robot for everything.
He argues we'll never see a dedicated shelf-stocking robot — mass-produced semi-humanoids will likely do that job — and home cleaning probably requires legs, at least for the long tail. Single-purpose robots will still have a place, and general-purpose hardware need not be humanoid, but generalist robots will win in many areas.
