Google AI Overview mistakes documentation search for a chat request
lilyraynyc · x · 2026-10-28
SEO expert Lily Ray shared a screenshot of an AI Overview fail: searching Google's own documentation for a quote, the AI Overview interpreted the query as a direct question, replying "Understood. An author will be explicitly listed whenever a reader expects to see one..." and asking which book or article she meant.
The mishap highlights intent-detection misfires on documentation-style queries — a notable edge case for SEO and research workflows that rely on precise Google results.
