Modal GA's multi-node clusters; early user calls it an absurdly elegant velocity unlock
nirmal_dist · x · 2026-10-28
A developer experimenting with context parallelism for discrete diffusion models tried Modal's newly GA'd multi-node clusters and called the infrastructure "absurdly elegant and convenient" — a clear velocity unlock.
- Modal's clustered primitive runs a Function or Server on colocated, networked containers; each container must request all GPUs on its host (e.g. gpu="H100:8"), CPU-only clusters unsupported.
- Inputs are broadcast to every container with rank 0's output returned; optional RDMA networking speeds up GPU collectives; modal.Cluster.fromcontext() exposes rank and container IPs inside containers.
