Long read: AGI is arguably already here, but mind uploading is far harder than scaling
UAP44 · reddit · 2026-10-28
A Reddit long-read argues we're getting two debates wrong in opposite directions. First, AGI is in an important sense already here: all of science is recorded in language (math included), and LLMs operate natively in that medium — a categorical shift; the remaining gap is reliability, not access. Fixating on arrival dates distracts from what's already happening to language-dependent jobs and institutions. Second, uploading is much harder than scaling: digital hardware suppresses analog variation with safety margins, clocks, and error correction, while neurons fire on continuously shifting conditions where exact spike timing carries information (STDP) and are physically coupled to the electromagnetic field (EEG/MEG, TMS). Adaptivity and language are separate layers — brains had adaptivity first, LLMs have language without it — so closing that gap requires understanding the substrate beneath language. The author flags established facts vs. speculation and cites sources in the comments.
