Playcanvas proposes SOG v3: 4-band SH, opacity above 1, per-gaussian blind data
willeastcott · x · 2026-10-28
Playcanvas engineer slimbuck opened a proposal for SOG (Self-Organizing Gaussians format) v3, seeking feedback before it becomes SplatTransform's default output.
Changes vs v2 (positions, scales, DC color, SH palette, pixel indexing and bundling unchanged):
- Rotation: drop quats.webp's 26-bit smallest-three encoding for 24-bit exponential maps stored in the previously unused alpha channels of meansl, meansu and scales
- Opacity: sh0.a/255 capped at 1 becomes a codebook index that may exceed 1, fixing decimated LODs rendering thinner and showing gaps when merged gaussians need more total opacity
- SH bands: extended from 1–3 to 1–4
- Blind data: optional blind.webp with one application-defined unsigned integer (1–4 bytes) per gaussian
- Extras: optional top-level application-defined JSON, à la glTF
As a version bump, v2-only readers must reject v3.
