The RealReal locks down its site against AI shopping agents after Muse abuse exposed
emmanuelvivier · x · 2026-10-28
Secondhand luxury retailer The RealReal has upgraded its bot defenses to keep out AI shopping agents. The Verge previously showed that Meta's Muse could exploit the 20-minute cart hold by endlessly re-adding items, blocking human shoppers for hours.
- CTO Luke Friang said the Muse use case is fixed; the new config makes it much harder for all agents to log in, add to cart and check out
- Agents can still surface listings and direct users to product pages
- A landmark case in the cat-and-mouse between AI agents and e-commerce platforms
