Cohere Labs' CulturalRiddles: 6,200 Riddles in 51 Languages Expose AI's Cultural Blind Spots
Cohere_Labs · x · 2026-10-28
Cohere Labs launched CulturalRiddles at the EMNLP 2026 MRL Workshop: a benchmark of 6,200 culturally grounded riddles across 51 languages from 45 countries, built by 167 independent researchers.
Testing shows models struggle significantly with cultures outside their training data, hallucinate rather than admit uncertainty, and fail even on translated content. The takeaway: cultural knowledge is distinct from written facts and remains a frontier current models haven't mastered. The open-collaboration paper is publicly available.
