2016 study: pathologist + AI hit 0.995 AUC in breast cancer metastasis detection

Sharing a table from the 2016 paper 'Deep Learning for Identifying Metastatic Breast Cancer' (ISBI grand challenge winner):
- Deep learning alone: 0.925 AUC for whole-slide classification, 0.7051 for tumor localization.
- Human pathologist alone: 0.966 AUC and 0.733 — better than the AI on its own.
- Combining predictions pushed AUC to 0.995, an 85% reduction in human error rate, showing AI's value as error correction rather than replacement.
The post is a reminder that human+AI collaboration has outperformed either alone for nearly a decade.
