From a Soviet journal to the F-117: why one engineer's insight shows LLMs aren't close yet
akbirthko · x · 2026-10-28
Arguing that "humans can do remarkable shit" and LLMs aren't close yet, the author cites Denys Overholser of Skunk Works, who in the late 1960s read about EM scattering from edges in a Soviet journal (Ufimtsev's theory) and turned it into the faceted shape of the F-117 stealth fighter. The point: this chain of cross-domain insight plus engineering execution is something LLMs have yet to replicate.
