Classification of Finite Simple Groups fully formalized in Lean: 43.1M lines
IgorCarron · x · 2026-10-28
Axiom Math announced a complete Lean formalization of the Classification of Finite Simple Groups (CFSG): 43.1M lines of Lean code, 2.05M declarations, 100 milestones, covering 715 papers and books, with every logical step checked by Lean's kernel. The first-generation proof spanned thousands of journal pages by 100 mathematicians over decades.
Along the way the team found an error in a published argument: a closure assertion used in a route to the Unbalanced Group Theorem has counterexamples. They published a paper with an alternative proof built on Solomon's 1976 theory, and are compiling errata with group theorists. Tim Sweeney wished John Conway could have seen it.
