Google updates favicon docs: Googlebot must follow homepage redirects
lilyraynyc · x · 2026-10-28
Google updated its favicon documentation to specify that Googlebot must be able to crawl the homepage and follow any redirects to the page where the favicon is specified, with Googlebot-Image crawling the favicon file — and these URLs must not be blocked by robots.txt or other means. The previous wording only required crawling of the homepage and the favicon file. Search Engine Roundtable sees it as a clarification rather than a major change; Lily Ray speculates it may be a response to spam being injected into favicons.
