Generate Biomedicines and Anthropic use Claude to refactor CAR T receptor, cutting signaling component 70%

Generate Biomedicines reports that six scientists used Claude alongside its own models and wet-lab data to refactor a CAR T-cell receptor for solid tumors: the redesigned signaling component is 70% shorter than a standard design, leaving room for new functions and improving cancer-cell killing in lab tests, compressing years of work into months at a fraction of the cost.
Anthropic's accompanying case study details life-science partnerships with six organizations (BigHat Biosciences, Bristol Myers Squibb, Divergence Labs, Enveda, Generate Biomedicines, The Column Group), plus its own in-house drug discovery programs targeting rare childhood muscular dystrophies. Anthropic's strategy: embed AI across the entire drug development pipeline—target identification, molecule design, manufacturability, regulatory filings, trial design—since bottlenecks are distributed throughout, and it plans to scale this substantially.
