The story behind GitHub HQ's Gitmos wall: mission control for open source
omojumiller · x · 2026-10-28
Omoju Miller recounts building Gitmos in 2020 — the wall of screens at GitHub's San Francisco HQ showing a globe with pull requests arcing between cities, a Trending Developers list, and a live data stream. The clip recently passed a million views as developers still spot their own names on it. The project grew from Cerebro, a GitHub Satellite 2019 installation built on the GitHub Events API, and was run without roadmap status or assigned engineers — he wrote the RFP, hired the creative team, built the data pipeline himself, and oversaw installs in SF and Redmond. It also visualized sponsorships as hearts to thank open source maintainers.
