a16z's Andrew Chen on new founder archetypes in the AI age: solo and non-technical founders
andrewchen · x · 2026-10-28
a16z partner Andrew Chen published a new essay, "New Founder Archetypes in the AI Age," examining two rising founder profiles. Solo founders: AI gives a 100x leverage boost so one person can ship a v1 that previously required a team — but cofounder teams may still move faster, someone still has to run a million customer meetings, and coding was arguably never the startup bottleneck. Non-technical founders: elite talent from finance/consulting and creatives who couldn't code can now build — yet a big gap remains between a demo and a reliable, scalable product, and if everyone can build v1, technical judgment may matter even more. The essay frames AI as redrawing who gets to be a founder.
