Hugging Face's bio team released Carbon-X, an open-weights model claiming frontier-level DNA understanding — fluent in both English and DNA sequences, available on Hugging Face.
- Averaged over five DNA benchmarks (BioReason Coding, BioReason Non-SNV, GenomeQA, NextBase, FrontierVEP), Carbon-X scores 66.7%, second only to GPT-6.1 Sol (67.5%) and ahead of Claude Opus 5.5 (60.9%), Kimi K3 (50.4%), Gemini 4 Argon (49.8%), DeepSeek V4.1 Flash (47.1%) and GLM-5.3 (39.8%).
- Built on Qwen3-14B (baseline 40.0%), DNA training added +26.7 points — and it reaches this without reasoning effort, while closed models run at max reasoning.
- The author argues biology/DNA understanding will become a main focus of frontier labs.
