NVIDIA-backed C-BRAIN uses AI to cut Alzheimer's analyses from weeks to minutes

Dementia affects 57 million people worldwide, with 10+ million new cases yearly — yet despite NIH funding growing 7x to $3.9B/year over 15 years, no treatment stops or reverses the disease. C-BRAIN, an 18-institution consortium led by Dr. Randall Bateman, is partnering with NVIDIA to change that.
Key points:
- Unlocking "dark data": unpublished findings, negative results and governed proprietary data never reach frontier models. C-BRAIN uses a hybrid centralized + federated approach so models learn locally without data leaving institutions.
- Compute: 64 on-prem NVIDIA data center GPUs plus Azure cloud nodes, Blackwell systems planned; using BioNeMo and MONAI.
- Two tools: OpenScientist (open-source agentic AI co-scientist with Lawrence Berkeley Lab — semi-autonomous hypothesis generation, analysis, auditable insights) and InsightEngine (tests hypotheses against literature, explores a biomedical knowledge graph, verifies claims to catch hallucinations).
- Results: OpenScientist completed analyses in minutes that scientists estimated would take weeks to months, at under $10 per run; across 200+ research groups, this could free up over a million hours of research capacity annually.
- Roadmap: build a multimodal biological foundation model across neuroimaging, multi-omics, fluid biomarkers and longitudinal clinical data to discover new causal mechanisms of brain aging and Alzheimer's within three years.
