Bret Victor's 2006 essay Magic Ink goes viral again: interactivity is a design crutch

A repost of Bret Victor's 2006 classic Magic Ink: Information Software and the Graphical Interface — especially its before/after flower shop UI redesign — is circulating again.

The essay argues that most software is really "information software," and that the industry's obsession with interactivity is misguided: interactivity is a curse for users and a crutch for designers. Context can be better expressed through context-sensitive information graphics that infer intent from the environment and history, with interaction as a last resort.

Case studies on train schedules and trip planning show how graphic design can replace generic controls, and the piece sketches a tool for building data-dependent graphics without engineering. Nearly two decades later, its thesis of minimizing meaningless interaction aligns strikingly with today's AI interface thinking.
