From Melted Sand to the Smartest Thing Ever: A Chip-to-LLM Chain of Wonder
IgorCarron · x · 2026-10-27
A widely shared reflection: humans melt sand, purify it to 99.99999%, have 'wizards' slowly draw it into an ingot, slice it, and inscribe a hundred billion on/off switches; run current through it and you get basic arithmetic — enough of it to do any math, and to describe reality well enough that we can teach it the ontological meaning of words and their distance in a high-dimensional space. Ask it what word comes next, and after a hundred billion repetitions it is apparently the smartest thing to ever exist.
