OpenAI's 2023 labor-impact paper revisited: mathematicians top the exposure list
skdh · x · 2026-10-27
Kangwook Lee and others urge revisiting OpenAI's March 2023 paper "GPTs are GPTs" on LLM labor-market impact, where mathematicians ranked #1 in exposure. The paper estimated 80% of US workers would have at least 10% of tasks affected, 19% seeing 50%+ affected, and that LLM-powered software could significantly speed up 47–56% of all work tasks. The accompanying table shows humans labeled 15 occupations as fully exposed (mathematicians, tax preparers, quant analysts) while the model labeled 86. Weijie notes his 2023 prediction was met with skepticism and reframes it: AI won't "replace" fields but reshape them by rewarding deep ties to real-world challenges.
