Gemma 31B reads a prescription that OCR couldn't a year ago
MaziyarPanahi · x · 2026-10-27
A year ago an OCR model could barely read a doctor's handwritten prescription. The same image fed to Gemma 31B — the top model in the author's handwriting test — correctly turned "buen daay" into "seven days." A striking one-year capability jump for open small models, with the author asking whether models should do a first pass before pharmacists review.
