The tokenizer tax: non-English AI users face up to 17x token cost gaps
alexvoica · x · 2026-10-27
A study by the Coalition for Language Equity in AI Research, covered by Rest of World, shows AI models consume far more tokens for some languages than others — a hidden "tokenizer tax."
- Among the top 20 internet languages, the most expensive need 1.5–5x more tokens than the cheapest
- Across 200 languages, the token cost gap in one model grows to 17x
- Tokenizers fragment multi-byte scripts (e.g. Malayalam), inflating both cost and context usage
Beyond pricing, the tax shrinks effective context windows for non-English users. The report notes a startup in Bengaluru pays a surcharge on every prompt while a competitor in Austin doesn't.
