Claude Code's idle compaction annoys users — here's the setting to turn it off
JasonBotterill · x · 2026-10-27
A developer slammed Claude Code's new idle compaction behavior and shared how to disable it.
What it does: if a session exceeds 200K tokens and sits idle for 54 minutes, Claude Code auto-summarizes it before the one-hour prompt cache expires, so the next message only reprocesses the summary instead of the full conversation.
How to turn it off (either works):
- On v2.1.302+, run /config and toggle off Idle compaction;
- Add "idleCompaction": false to your Claude Code settings file.
