Physicist on OpenAI's math result: it's mathematical physics, not theoretical physics
skdh · x · 2026-10-27
Physics commentator Sabine Hossenfelder argues OpenAI's latest announcement concerns mathematical physics, not theoretical physics — two disciplines often conflated but fundamentally different.
- Theoretical physics: part of physics proper; aims to explain existing observations or refine theories to make testable predictions.
- Mathematical physics: usually housed in math departments; it 'cleans up the mess' physicists leave in their theories, and sometimes studies frameworks with no connection to nature (higher/lower dimensions, fields that don't exist).
Quoting physicist Andreas Karch for context: a result like Yang-Mills existence is just tying up a loose end for the hyper mathematically minded. Physicists have been doing precision calculations for decades and implicitly assume it exists — 'of course it exists. But sure, would be nice to have a proof.' In other words, AI-assisted formal proofs of this kind have limited value for actual physics research.
