Stanford's BioBabel: AI Agents Auto-Port Scientific Packages Across Languages
anshulkundaje · x · 2026-10-27
Stanford's Qiu Lab introduced BioBabel, an AI-agent framework that autonomously reconstructs scientific software across languages (R→Python, Python→C++/Rust), accelerating computation, preserving functionality, and making tools accessible to AI agents.
About 20 packages have been ported so far, including UMI-tools (Python→C++), visualization libraries like ggplot2, ComplexHeatmap, patchwork and ggrepel, single-cell tools Monocle 2/3, and graphics infrastructure like grid, scales and gtable.
The project also invites community collaboration: report porting bugs, co-port your own packages, or nominate classic still-used tools for modernization. Community outputs already include a Python port of SpatialCellChat.
