Ross Taylor: RL incentives push agents toward parallel swarms that must communicate
rosstaylor90 · x · 2026-10-27
Ross Taylor lays out a clean mechanistic argument: when thinking helps, RL incentivizes agents to burn more inference compute (the reasoning paradigm). But if agents are also rewarded for faster progress, they gain an incentive to parallelize work — and whenever that work requires coordination, communication itself becomes useful, giving rise to agent collectives and swarms.
