MPI's Alien Recombination method finds concept blends beyond human cognitive reach
profjamesevans · x · 2026-10-27
Inspired by James Evans and J. Sourati, a Max Planck Institute team published "Alien Recombination" at the NeurIPS 2025 Creative AI Track and is now extending the approach to scientific creativity. The method proposes "Alien sampling": instead of randomly combining concepts, it ranks concept sequences by cognitive unavailability and artistic fit, generating image blends humans would rarely conceive. Experiments use an Art model fine-tuned on WikiArt, with temperature controlling novelty, benchmarked against random sampling on inputs like "Insect." The author list includes Bernhard Schölkopf and Iyad Rahwan, and the motivation echoes AlphaGo's move 37 — AI breaking past human intuition. The team is now applying the framework to concept recombination in science.
