OpenAI announces three science discoveries and a new academic 'shepherds' model
The Verge AI · rss · 2026-10-27
Per The Verge, less than a month after mass-releasing hundreds of manuscripts claiming solutions to long-standing math questions, OpenAI announced three more "major" discoveries spanning math, computer science, and physics. This time, external experts OpenAI calls "shepherds" guided the CS and physics results, while for the math problem experts advised releasing the raw AI output for researchers to work through their own explanations. Results were added to GitHub today, including a local smoothing proof for the Euclidean wave equation using an auxiliary parabolic technique.
