OpenAI claims 3 AI-driven breakthroughs: local smoothing conjecture, ETH disproof, Yang–Mills
Dr_Singularity · x · 2026-10-27
OpenAI announced three potentially enormous AI-driven research breakthroughs:
- Mathematics: a proof of the local smoothing conjecture in every dimension, also resolving the Kakeya and Stein restriction conjectures.
- Computer science: a disproof of the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) — a foundational assumption behind hundreds of papers on computational difficulty, reopening questions about how fast important problems can be solved. The result was verified in Lean and may guide the search for faster algorithms.
- Physics: rigorous existence proofs for quantum field theories including QCD and a unified extension of the Standard Model, with the Yang–Mills existence result addressing part of a Millennium Prize problem.
OpenAI reports Lean formalizations for the math result, the ETH disproof, and Yang–Mills existence. Independent experts including Nobel laureate David Gross and two original ETH proposers are organizing efforts to examine the work.
