Ruliobiology: interactive slides grow creatures from tiny cellular automata rules
AjdDavison · x · 2026-10-27
Alexander Mordvintsev released Ruliobiology, an interactive web explainer inspired by Stephen Wolfram's cellular automata concept, showing how a table of colored squares can grow shapes that look alive and how evolution finds remarkable rules on its own.
- Each new square reads the three above it and copies the rule-table answer; rules are click-to-edit
- Symmetry math: mirror-symmetric rules shrink 2^8 possibilities to 575 real choices
- Built-in mutation: one rule change can do nothing or transform the creature entirely
- Evolution loop: mutate → grow → score by lifetime/width/mass → keep if not worse, runnable thousands of times per second
