OpenAI announces AI-generated proofs targeting ETH, Kakeya, and Yang–Mills in one day
ChrisGPT · x · 2026-10-27
OpenAI announced three AI-generated research claims in a single day:
- A proof of local smoothing in every dimension, which OpenAI says also resolves the Kakeya and Stein restriction conjectures in all dimensions.
- A disproof of the Exponential Time Hypothesis, underpinning hundreds of conditional hardness results. The writeup and Lean formalization are public, with Impagliazzo, Paturi, and Ryan Williams leading academic examination.
- Existence proofs for QCD and a unified completion of the Standard Model, including pure Yang–Mills existence (part of a Clay Millennium Prize problem). David Gross leads the physics collaboration; those materials are withheld pending review.
Caveats: ETH being false doesn't settle P vs NP, and Yang–Mills existence alone doesn't solve the full mass gap problem — but the volume of claims in one announcement is extraordinary.
