Categorica open-sources native Prometheus exporter module for NGINX, dropping the sidecar
Technovangelist · x · 2026-10-27
Categorica has open-sourced its own Prometheus statistics exporter built as a native NGINX module.
- Why: The standard NGINX Prometheus Exporter runs its own web server, typically deployed as a Docker sidecar—extra complexity, and the metrics endpoint itself escapes metrics collection ("who watches the watchmen").
- How: The exporter is compiled into NGINX as a plugin, eliminating the sidecar entirely.
- Usage: Building NGINX from source is recommended to ensure required features are compiled in, though not strictly required; basic familiarity with the configure/make/make install workflow helps.
The author also quips that NGINX's status as the de facto reverse proxy may be a few years out of date, with easier and more powerful options available today.
