Microsoft has offered voluntary exit packages to roughly 60,000 employees — about 27% of its 223,000-person global workforce — across the US, Canada, India and the UK, according to Chief People Officer Amy Coleman, who called the program new for the company.
Key context:
- In May, Microsoft reportedly planned buyouts for 8,750 people (7% of its US workforce); in July it cut 4,800 jobs (2.1% globally), heavily affecting the Xbox business.
- The workforce moves come as the company spends aggressively on AI; quarterly earnings are due Wednesday.
- Microsoft stock rose about 1% on the news, after hitting an all-time high earlier this month.
