arXiv 'on hold' purgatory draws fire as papers sit for weeks with zero status updates
JustinAngel · x · 2026-10-25
Researchers are slamming arXiv's opaque 'on hold' moderation: one paper held for 1.5 weeks, another for 3 weeks despite endorsement, multiple authors, novel results and zero AI writing. arXiv's auto-reply says 'no action is required', offers no details or status updates, and even tells authors not to email. Critics argue the 'kabuki theater of reviews' harms arXiv as a preprint server and suggest a public review queue — or authors may just self-host instead.
