OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Terra matches more intelligence at under a third the cost of GPT-5.6 Terra
ArtificialAnlys · x · 2026-10-27
OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra, its first Terra-class model since GPT-5.6, pushing the cost-efficiency frontier.
Pricing: $1/$5 per million input/output tokens — half or less of GPT-5.6 Terra's $2/$12. Cache writes halved to $1.25; cached input dropped to $0.05 from $0.20 (a quarter of the old price).
Key eval results (Artificial Analysis):
- Intelligence Index: +6 points over GPT-5.6 Terra at max effort at $0.40 vs $1.40 per task; low/medium effort settings are Pareto-optimal for cost efficiency; 4 points below GPT-6.1 Sol and 10 above GPT-6 Luna at max effort
- Coding Agent Index v2.0 score of 48: 6 points below GPT-6.1 Sol (54), 17 above GPT-6 Luna (31); xhigh and low settings on the cost frontier
- Hallucination rate dropped 50 points: guessing 38% of the time on AA-Omniscience vs 88% for GPT-5.6 Terra, while accuracy rose 2 points
- 20-point jump on Terminal-Bench 4.0, rivaling GPT-6.1 Sol at max effort; smaller gains elsewhere (e.g. +5 on GDP.pdf)
