The RealReal upgrades bot defenses after AI agent exploit of its 20-minute cart hold
The Verge AI · rss · 2026-10-27
Secondhand luxury retailer The RealReal is updating its bot defense system to make it harder for AI agents to shop on its site.
Days earlier, The Verge showed that Meta's Muse agent could exploit the platform's item reserve system: items held in a cart become unavailable to others for 20 minutes, and the agent simply re-added listings as soon as each hold expired, indefinitely blocking purchases. The update targets exactly this abuse — a fresh case of AI agent automation clashing with e-commerce rules.
