Steve Hsu on OpenAI's Navier-Stokes paper: 'maybe beyond what a human could have come up with'

Physicist Steve Hsu shares expert reactions to OpenAI's Navier-Stokes blow-up construction paper: PDE experts call it 'technically unbelievable, maybe beyond what a human could have come up with but not beyond human understanding,' with several groups now largely deciphering it. The ingredients echo prior literature (e.g. Leibovich-Stewartson 1983) but the combination is unprecedented, and nobody had expected convex integration to appear in such a blow-up construction. Scott Armstrong adds that the construction draws on convex integration: a fluid instability makes the flow itself generate oscillations from background shear, with Reynolds stress as the driving force — distinct from Albritton–Brué–Colombo's unstable vortex and Córdoba–Martínez-Zoroa's scale-crossing vorticity amplification.
