Anthropic's new agent guidance: skip subagents, single loop runs ~2x faster
mark_k · x · 2026-10-26
Anthropic has published new agent architecture guidance with a contrarian core message: most agents don't need subagents.
- The new advice is to fold subagents into a single agent loop, converting them into skills and on-demand tools; in one comparison, the single loop ran about 2x faster.
- Anthropic also notes agents get worse at picking the right tool once they have more than 30–50 tools to choose from.
- Subagents still make sense for parallel work or when the context gets too large.
For everything else, a single loop is simpler and faster.
