Photonic crystal modulator with built-in EO equalizer hits 200G/lane at 26 fJ/bit in 320 microns
vikramskr · x · 2026-10-26
An open-access Nature Communications paper demonstrates a silicon photonic-crystal slow-light modulator with a built-in electro-optic equalizer, achieving 200G per lane at just 320 microns device size and 26 fJ/bit energy—dramatically smaller than millimeter-scale MZMs and far less DSP-heavy. Measured bandwidth with the EO equalizer reaches 80 GHz (N=3) and 55 GHz (N=4), clearing the 200G/λ requirement, targeting energy-efficient multi-Tb/s optical interconnects for AI data centers.
