Aakash Gupta published a complete guide to the "Model PM" role, now the highest-paying PM sub-field. Open US roles posting ranges show a median base of $345K vs $216K for non-AI PM roles — a 60% premium that holds across mid, senior, and staff levels.
He analyzed public LinkedIn profiles of 316 people in product roles at 22 companies that train AI models: 85% were PMs before joining. Madhu Guru, former product lead for Gemini and Veo, estimates fewer than 75 people globally have the required depth, making the skill shortage the root of the premium. The guide covers role taxonomy, who's hiring, day-to-day work at top labs, and how to acquire the skillset (full post is paywalled).
