AGMAI advises AI labs against designating mathematicians to vet model math outputs
AlexKontorovich · x · 2026-10-26
The Advisory Group on Mathematics and AI (AGMAI), based at the Institute for Advanced Study, published a clarification of its September guidelines: AI labs should not designate specific mathematicians to receive, verify and interpret AI-generated mathematical results before anyone else.
- The designated-mathematician model has obvious appeal: early expert eyes, better initial writeups, a knowledgeable point of contact.
- But AGMAI concludes the disadvantages outweigh the benefits: post-release human understanding must remain organic and community-led, and picking favorites distorts that process.
- The statement stresses it is not a criticism of mathematicians who have served in this role, only a recommendation that labs drop the practice going forward.
