Gartner: 80% of neoclouds to cease independent ops by 2030, $4T at write-down risk

Gartner predicts cost pressure will force over 80% of neocloud providers to cease independent operations by 2030. AI-optimized IaaS spending grows from $66B (2027) to $174B (2030), but too slowly for providers to recoup investments before current AI chips are replaced. Data center owners would need $8.5T cumulative revenue through 2030 to cover capex, financing and a 12% return, vs. attributable AI revenue of at most $3.6T. Over $4T in asset value could face write-downs through 2032.
Elon Musk concurred, noting debt markets have nearly shut off funding for companies without revenue independent of AI data centers; SpaceX's $40B GPU debt was possible due to investment-grade rating and Starlink/launch revenue. He expects guppy-level death and consolidation among the 200+ neoclouds.
