Athena Crisis migrates off Relay: 1k fewer lines, 3.7% smaller bundles, ~400ms faster page loads
cnakazawa · x · 2026-10-26
cnakazawa migrated indie game Athena Crisis from Relay to fate, a library he started building a year ago. Inspired by Relay, fate wasn't meant to be a GraphQL client — but it turned into one anyway.
Measured results:
- 1,000 lines less code, gzip bundle 3.7% smaller (1.458MB → 1.405MB)
- Warm Home document load: 642ms → 374ms (42% faster); profile summary 968ms → 762ms (21% earlier)
- Fixing fetches delayed by an animation delay added up to 400ms faster page loads versus last week
- Now uses Async React instead of manual mutation/pending/error handling
