Claude Opus builds an interactive map of all US water use, county by county
AndyMasley · x · 2026-10-26
Andy Masley is running Claude Opus in the background over a week to incrementally build an interactive map of every US county, power plant, aquifer and dam, tracing where America's 322 billion gallons/day of withdrawals (2015) actually go.
Based on USGS data, irrigation, golf courses and power plants account for over three quarters of withdrawals; total withdrawals peaked in 1980 and fell 25% by 2015 despite 95 million more people, driven mostly by power plants. The project doubles as a demo of long-running agents handling large-scale data visualization engineering.
