'If your product isn't good enough, you become a neocloud' — Together, Groq and Mistral all pile into GPU rentals
AccBalanced · x · 2026-10-26
jessiedong observes that struggling AI companies are becoming neoclouds — read as giving up on products, but also a sign a new kind of cloud is forming: differentiated by what its software can do rather than which GPUs it owns, selling tokens instead of GPU hours, and running on whatever chip is cheapest.
Examples: Together AI now makes most of its money renting GPUs (raised $800M at $8.3B in July); Groq took NVIDIA's $20B license deal, then raised $650M to run NVIDIA GPUs next to its own chips; inference-software vendor Gimlet Labs just announced its own data center; Mistral launched Mistral Compute. Adding GPU rentals is framed as an opportunistic, market-savvy move — not just an exit for dying companies.
