The Economist: AI compute is the new oil — and exchanges like Compute Exchange are building the market for it
AccBalanced · x · 2026-10-26
The Economist argues "AI compute is the new oil — and needs a new market," reporting that proper markets are forming around the compute supply chain: budding exchanges like Compute Exchange list GPUs by location, rental duration, price and availability; derivatives titans CME Group and ICE have teamed with startups on compute indices pegged to AI chip rental prices, awaiting regulatory approval; and OTC compute instruments are emerging.
Smaller operators buying and renting compute face double-digit interest rates as lenders struggle to price risk. Compute Exchange's carmenli celebrated the coverage, describing a neutral, independent marketplace where buyers and sellers discover prices, access verified supply, and transact via marketplaces, RFQs, and auctions.
