Musk warns of stranded compute: Nscale has only ~25k of 461k GPUs running as power gear slips years

Elon Musk warns that "a lot of stranded compute in partially complete data centers" is coming, citing hard supply-chain numbers:
- Nscale's IPO filing (Sept 2026): as of Aug 31, only 25,000 active GPUs vs 461,000 active and contracted — roughly 95% of committed GPUs not yet running.
- Wood Mackenzie (July 2026): generator step-up transformer lead times exceeded 160 weeks in Q1 2026 (143 weeks in 2024); high-voltage circuit breakers hit 125 weeks vs 77 in 2023. GPUs ship in months; energizing gear takes 2–3 years, exposing projects that ordered chips before locking electrical equipment.
- Building gas power doesn't skip the queue: GE Vernova's gas equipment backlog grew from 100 GW to 116 GW in one quarter, with turbines booked years out.
Takeaway: the AI buildout bottleneck has shifted from chips to power infrastructure, and chip-first ordering will strand compute.
